The snow is finally melting in Prishtina and that horrible period of sub-zero temperatures is over. I am now an expert Prishtina walker. Now I can actually remember what the city looks like without a layer of ice and snow on top of everything. I’ve seen trucks carrying snow out of the city, and my question is: where the hell were they two weeks ago? I’m hoping that there won’t be another cold chill that will freeze everything again. If another snowstorm or drop in temperature occurs you might find these survival tips I learned useful:
Tip No. 1
If you have a choice between an icy sidewalk and clear road, walk on the edge of the street. When a car comes your way, step on the sidewalk and wait for it to pass.
Tip No. 2
Good walking boots are crucial. Get a solid pair of leather boots for ice and snow, and a pair of insulated rain boots for when everything turns into mud and water.
Tip No. 3
Don't rush. If other people want to break their necks trying to get to their destination, let them. A slow and steady pace will prevent falls.
Tip No. 4
If you are walking up or down an icy set of stairs, get some leverage by gripping a wall, or a rail, or by sliding down.
Tip No. 5
Walking on ice with a bit of snow is better than walking on clear ice. The snow will give you a bit of extra traction.
Tip No. 6
If you're walking with a friend, try walking arm in arm. Try not to fall on them or bring them down with you.
Tip No. 7
Don't listen to your iPod or answer your phone. The sidewalk needs all of your attention. If you look down to change a song or send a text message, you might slip and fall and crack your head.
Tip No. 8
When you're walking up the stairs to your apartment, don't assume that you're safe. An ultra super thin layer of ice lurks here, too. Refer to Tip No. 4.
Tip No. 9
Take a taxi.
Tip No. 10
Leave. Wait for the summer.
Print this blog and put it on your fridge for next winter. Don’t expect anything crazy like salt on the street or snowplows.
